Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Through Memoir

The Call of the Last Frontier is an award-winning bestselling memoir of my life in remote Alaska and shares my MS story with readers. Memoirs and biographies of people living with multiple sclerosis spread awareness all year long, not just in March when MSers and their support systems participate in worldwide events to spread the word and the color orange—the official MS color.

During my first years as an Alaska bush teacher, symptoms of multiple sclerosis sent me to Anchorage for what would become a diagnosis of MS in the future. Part of my Alaska adventure story includes living without nearby medical, traveling to Seattle and Anchorage to see specialists, working with MS, and eventually medically retiring due to my illness.

I began MSsymptoms.me in 2013 to give back to the community. My goal has been to educate other MSers and their support circles on the latest MS research and to share what it is like for me living with multiple sclerosis to give others a comparison to their own experiences. In recent years, I have been doing better, and now maybe my blog and story will also bring hope to other MS warriors.

(All links to Amazon are affiliates.) Many MS warrior authors are sharing their stories on blogs and in memoirs. Managing MS by Debbie Petrina is a detailed account of living with multiple sclerosis. Comedian Yvonne deSousa pokes a bit of fun at life with multiple sclerosis in MS Madness! Yvonne also has a monthly blog on her page with the subtitle “Finding Humor in a Multiple Sclerosis Life.”

High Plains Book Award Logo

High Plains Book Awards 2022 – It is an honor to be a finalist for the High Plains Book Award for my book The Call of the Last Frontier. Though I didn’t take home the gold plaque, it was amazing to be sitting beside outstanding authors with impressive resumes, such as Craig Johnson, author of the Longmire series. Congratulations to the 2022 winners and finalists! May we all return to our desks to write the next round of fabulous books.

In June 2022, The Call of the Last Frontier won the Western Horizon Award. It has been an exciting year, with the book being at the top of Amazon bestsellers in multiple categories throughout 2022. Thank you to my readers and those who have left reviews/ratings on Amazon & Goodreads to help my book succeed. I appreciate you all!
